Memorial Day tribute to honor Virginia vets

Memorial flagAmerican Legion Post 87 Commander John Harmon invites the public to attend a Memorial Day tribute ceremony at Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia on Monday, May 27 beginning at 10 a.m. All 2,000-plus graves at the cemetery will be decorated with an American flag and the service branch flag of the deceased veteran.

U.S. Senator Tim Kaine will deliver the keynote speech remembering those lost on battlefields at home and abroad, and recognize the sacrifices of those who have served the country and their families.

The ceremony will feature: Amelian Amber Hayes Ellington singing the national anthem; Nottoway High School U.S. Navy JROTC Color Guard; the Virginia National Guard 29th

Division Band; St. Andrew’s Legion Pipe and Drum Corps; a firing party from Fort Lee; and others. The VFW Ladies Auxiliary will provide refreshments and water will be available at the ceremony.

Commander Harmon expects 2,000 to 3,000 people to attend the event. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and use the shuttle bus service available from the Amelia County High School at 8500 Otterburn Road at the intersection of Otterburn and Five Forks Road.

The cemetery is located at 10300 Pridesville Road and the route to the cemetery is well-marked from U.S. Route 360. The event is hosted by American Legion Post 87 of Amelia. For more information, please call Adjutant Jim Glasscock at 338-1525 or 561-0447.
