KitchenBusiness owner Charles G. Mitchell was in need of a commissary kitchen for his food cart business, Relish Food Carts. The Virginia Department of Health has strict guidelines in place to protect the public from food contamination, and using his home for food preparation was not an option.

His search for a commissary kitchen ended when he found a place with two kitchens in Village at Waterford Shopping Center. Two kitchens, however, proved one too many for Mitchell, so he opened his kitchens to others in need of a VDH-approved facility.

Relish The Kitchen, located in the former Kids in the Kitchen space, is available for rent by the hour, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Chesterfield County’s first and only VDH-approved shared-use kitchen, has a great setup for caterers, food cart operators, bakers, and those offering cooking classes, or contemplating a startup business.

There are two fully equipped kitchens. The front kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans and utensils, and has a convection oven, a standard oven, a stove, and prep table. “This kitchen is great for cooking classes,” says Kitchen Manager Diana Smith.

The back kitchen is the prep kitchen, outfitted with a convection oven a standard oven, a stove and prep tables. There is also space for dry storage, refrigeration and frozen food. As required by the Virginia Health Department there is a large three-compartment sink and a dump sink.

“We chose Brandermill because it is a great central location, right off 288 and Powhite,” says Smith. “And we are going to offer business startup classes soon for people looking to start a food cart, restaurant, catering business or cooking class with the VDH and Virginia Department of Agriculture.

Relish The Kitchen is located at 13566 Waterford Place. For more information, please call Kitchen Managers between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 744-3107, email, or visit
