Last year marked the first jeans drive at Clover Hill High School, a cause in which every school in Chesterfield County participated, collecting 6,300 denim clothing items.
This year, during the fourth annual Whitten Brothers Great Denim Drive, the goal is raised to 10,000 denim articles, a challenge the Cavaliers, led by Principal Dr. Deborah Marks, took to heart.
Sponsored by CHHS Parent Teacher Student Association, the jeans drive started on September 4 and continued through September 23. Students, with daily encouragement from Dr. Marks, had the option to bring in any type of denim clothing and place it in a donation box in the school’s main office.
“I was in charge of supporting the jeans drive by encouraging students through the announcements,” said Dr. Marks. “The PTSA handled everything else.”
The collected items were taken to Chesterfield Towne Center, the main sponsor of the county-wide effort to gather denim for recycling by Goodwill.
One thousand dollars in prize money was at stake for the top three high schools with the most donations, and the number one overall contributor received an additional $500. The next 12 runner-up schools earned $250 for their efforts.
On September 26, a ceremony was held to announce the winners of the jeans drive. CHHS was crowned first in the high school competition as well as first overall, having donated 3,219 denim articles of clothing, and received $1,500. From the beginning of the drive, the PTSA, led by PTSA President Ann Marie Luhmann, hoped to win the jean drive in order to use the prize money to replenish PTSA funds.
“The money will be used to support the teachers and the schools. The hospitality committee plans luncheons for the teachers on special days,” says Luhmann, “and when Dr. Marks makes a request for something, we try to provide that from our funds.” Recently the PTSA purchased a new Cavalier mascot costume for the school.
